When designing and installing an effective poolventilation system, an important aspect is often overlooked: the location forthe pool's AHU (Air Handling Unit).
The location of the AHU can’t just be a technicalafterthought. It plays a critical role in performance, system maintenance, energy efficiency and long-term durability.
At Airstream Technologies, we specialise in designingventilation and heat recovery units specifically for the demands of indoorswimming pools, and we’re often asked where the best place to install the unitis. So here’s what we recommend, and why it matters:
Why does location matter?
1. Humidity Control
Indoor pools are humid environments, and controllingmoisture is essential to protect the building structure, then to ensure apleasant atmosphere. The placement of the AHU can lead to inefficient airdistribution and ineffective dehumidification.
2. Energy Efficiency
Shorter duct runs minimise heat loss, reduce air leakage, and lower resistance in the ductwork. All of these aspects contribute toreduced energy use and lower running costs.
3. System Lifespan & Corrosion Prevention
The placement of the AHU directly affects exposure tohumid and chemically active air (particularly chloramines). Placing the unit ina dry, ventilated space will help preserve components and extend the product’slifecycle.
Airstream’s Recommended Locations
Airstream recommends that the AHU be located as close aspossible to the pool area. By having the unit close by, this increasesefficiency while maintaining temperature and humidity levels consistentlyacross the pool hall.
The ideal location is often a dedicated plant roomadjacent to the pool hall, which provides:
- Minimal ductwork distance
- Easier maintenance access
- Reduced fan effort and power usage
- Improved air circulation and pressure balance
If a plantroom isn’t available, mounting the unitexternally on a wall of the pool building is also an option. This allows simplerouting for supply and return air, while keeping the unit out of thehigh-humidity internal environment.
The Area To Avoid
While Airstream units are built with durable materialsand designed to withstand demanding environments, we do not recommendinstalling them within the pool hall itself. Why?
- Pool halls are high in moisture and chloramines, leadingto metal components being highly corroded
- Direct exposure can cause premature wear, increasedmaintenance, and unexpected downtime
- Maintenance staff need a dry, accessible, and ventilatedspace for safe service access.
Above or Below the Pool?
Mounting the unit above or below the pool hall will alsowork well, but both options require careful planning:
- Roof-mounted units: To ensure the roof structure issuitable for the weight and enough space for servicing. Then to also considerweatherproofing and drainage.
- Basement locations: Avoiding flood-prone areas. To havegood drainage, waterproofing, and ventilation is essential
With either choice, always maintain full front-widthaccess to the unit to allow for complete removal of any components, should theyneed to be serviced or replaced in future.
How About External Mounting?
All of our Airstream pool ventilation units are fullysuitable for external mounting. Our units are weatherproof and designed toperform efficiently in a wide range of UK weather conditions. This can be apractical choice for projects with limited internal space.
Dusting Matters Too…
- Keep fresh air and exhaust air duct runs short and wellseparated to prevent cross-contamination.
- Poor separation can lead to stale air re-entering thesystem, reducing air quality and efficiency.
- Shorter ductwork also means lower static pressure in the system.
When it comes to locating the pool ventilation unit, there is plenty to think about but here are key take aways
- Aim to position the AHU as close as possible to the poolhall
- A dry, well-ventilated area with easy access
- Avoid placing units directly in humid pool areas
- Ensure proper duct separation and short runs
- Allow adequate spacearound the unit for maintenance
